The Louvre enriched its collections through a variety of sources. In addition to its the museum’s own acquisitions, the museum receives donations, through which a collector donates a part or the entirety of his collection, during his lifetime. In contrast, a posthumous legacy entails the donation of an entire collection -- or selected works -- to the museum after the death of the proprietor. The Louvre has received, to date, more than 2,700 such donations.
